#10, Bull Elk, Mammoth Hot Springs, YNP, WY

Photographer's Notes:
Antlers of the bull elk are used throughout the
year for defense, but during the mating season,
the antlers are a show of strength and pride.

#10, a tagged bull elk is one of a few mature
bulls that take over Mammoth Hot Springs
during the elk rut (mating season).  Here he is
flaring his nostrils and opening his mouth wide,
exposing a scent organ that helps him find
female elk that might be receptive.

This picture was taken in the fall of 2007. (He
was tagged due to his aggressive behavior towards people &
property - usually not his fault in the realm of Mammoth Hot
Springs. More than not, it is the human who gets too close
during this 'high testosterone' time of the year!)
