Elk Antler

Photographer's Notes:
Antlers are shed every year, only to re-grow the
next spring.  Made of calcium, they are bone.  An
extension from the skull, they act as a defense
from rival bulls as well as predators.

This fine specimen has laid on the ground,
untouched for many years.  Antlers are taken
from the wild by some as a 'trophy', a souvenir
by others.  Inside Yellowstone National Park,
antlers are not allowed to be taken.  I found this
lichen-rich elk antler off trail in an area rarely
seen by humans.  I imagine it is still there, even
years after this image was taken.
