Bison Wallow, Yellowstone National Park, WY

Photographer's Notes:
A bull bison rolls in his own scent. During the mating season, wild bison will scrape the ground, urinate
in the "wallow", proceed to roll in it, then shake off and do it all over again elsewhere. This dust cloud
allows his scent to waft through the winds telling other bulls that he is dominant one!
Wallows allow rainwater and snow melt to penetrate down into the water table, much easier than
through the root structure of adjacent plant communities. So wallows, as disruptive as they are to the
plant life, they do assist in the overall health of the ecosystem.
