Bachelor herds are not uncommon before the rut (mating season) which takes place during the month of November. This group of 14 rams, led by this large mature "master" ram are edging the Northern Boundary of Yellowstone. This display of flehmen is seen during the rut. It is a way of the male to scent a female sheep (ewe) that might be in estrous using a gland (Jacobson's organ) on the upper palate. In this case, the ram might be trying to gain my scent, which was at the time, downwind from their location. This image is currently available in multiple sizes, but has been cropped in a way that does not fit factory cut mats and frames.
